Mackintosh Timeless Shaker Kitchen near Ilminster, Somerset

This design using a Mackintosh Timeless Shaker primed door is a favourite. Choosing to hand-paint our Mackintosh kitchen cabinetry really compliments the hub of the home in this beautiful converted mill. Selecting the right colour palette to give heft to the exposed natural honey-coloured Hamstone wall was our starting point. The all electric Total Control Aga takes centre stage in the kitchen design with the convenience of 3 ovens and 2 hotplates being individually controlled to coincide with warm spells of weather and fewer people to cook for. Yet the option to still enjoy an ambient heat related to a traditional Aga during colder months is still very much a feature of these modern cookers. This particular appliance really suits the clients’ lifestyle; with a love for cooking and the beauty of being greeted by a cosy warmth after long periods of time spent outside running a small holding.

The design maintains a traditional feel with the solid oak worktops, oak drawer boxes, vintage Belfast and Aga. We used the windows to our advantage by painting them white to allow your eye to be taken beyond the kitchen, into the garden and over the adjoining farmland. Glass splash-backs colour matched to Farrow and Ball paint gives a fresh take on tiled areas. The Fisher and Paykel French door fridge-freezer offers chilled and filtered water and generous storage facilities. A Quooker Fusion Flex provides instant boiling water and a pull-out hose for rinsing home grown vegetables and large Aga trays. The double dishwasher drawers work independently should there only be 2 for dinner. Rooms sometimes feel unfinished without layers of interest. Fortunately, our client has fabulous, well-chosen pieces including oil paintings and seating which completes the overall look.

Testimony

‘I absolutely love my new kitchen. Ruth did an exceptional job with the design, suggesting things that I had not considered, questioning what I wanted and why, and listening to what was important to me. Ruth went above and beyond her role as a kitchen designer and was there to hold my hand throughout the installation.’ Mrs Lovejoy-Mellonie

Customer Thoughts

What were the main reasons for choosing to work with us on this occasion?
‘I really liked Ruth Salway and felt that she listened to me – about what I wanted out of a kitchen. I loved the design and she was able to do what we wanted within our budget’

How would you describe your experience with the team who looked after you, particularly the designer.
‘I found everyone at Spillers very helpful. Ruth Salway was the person I had most interaction with and is the main reason I chose to buy my kitchen through Spillers. She took a great deal of time to listen to what I wanted in a kitchen and that I wanted something exceptional, but I didn’t’ think I had the budget to achieve exceptional. Ruth designed a fantastic kitchen that took all my requirements into consideration and showed us where we could skimp on price and make up for it in other areas (oak inlays in the drawers for example). Prior to the project commencing, Ruth introduced me to and organised a site visit with the building contractors. During the installation, Ruth visited regularly and was always on hand to offer advice on last minute changes in decisions, recommendations with lighting, etc. I can honestly say it was a pleasure working with Spillers.’

Did the designer suggest anything you hadn’t heard of before, and if so what?
‘I had a design in my mind particularly where I wanted the Aga to be sited and Ruth suggested a different place and explained her reasons. I went with what she suggested and am very glad I did. I was also unsure about having the glass splashback behind the aga in a different colour to around the walls. Again, I trusted Ruth’s judgement and of course she was right. The end result is fantastic. I wasn’t a fan of wooden work surfaces and thought they might be too much work, but on Ruth’s recommendation I have gone with them and am very pleased with the result. Oak is such a warm material and I think it really makes the kitchen.’

Most important question of all, can you sum up your overall experience with Spillers and your designer?
‘Yes, absolutely, to both questions.’
